Libby Cameron

B. Pharm, Adv Cert Urban Hort

Libby often refers to herself as a gardening ambassador. She firmly believes in the power of gardening to make you feel positive about life and to appreciate the beauty of the natural world. She loves to talk about gardening and write about gardening and also enjoys the trial and error of pottering in her own garden. She is a qualified horticulturist, freelance garden writer and gardening 'communicator'.

She has worked in retail nurseries, conducted gardening classes and workshops, and particularly enjoys working with novice gardeners and first home owners, believing that if they are successful at the start, they will be enthusiastic about gardening for the rest of their lives. She is Vice-President and Bulletin Editor for the Mosman Home Gardeners' Society, and has helped  this 68 year old club return to a growing, active membership over the last few years.

Since the 'turn of the century' (2001), Libby has been a tour leader for Ross Tours, and with them has led tours to countries including Italy, Canada, Borneo and New Zealand as well as many parts of Australia.

Being passionate about the natural world, she enjoys being one of the Ross Tours nature tour guides, leading regular tours to the Outback and to Sabah, where she really loves to see the changes from year to year. The outback has shown its many sides during the past decade.

As an active member of the Friends of the Botanic Gardens, Libby convenes a volunteer group called the Speakers’ Bureau, promoting interest in Sydney's three Botanic Gardens, their history, achievements and activities, as well as the importance of the Friends in their ongoing development. She is a regular speaker at Garden Clubs and other community groups such as Probus Clubs, speaking for the Friends of the Gardens, and for Ross Tours.

Libby enjoys studying garden history, and appreciates the different styles of gardening throughout the world, from English landscapes to formal Italian gardens, and from ancient Moorish gardens to modern, organic styles designed by masters such as Piet Oudolph. She believes that many people don't appreciate the enjoyment and the knowledge of the lifestyles of other cultures that comes from exploring the gardens of the world. In addition these gardens provide inspiration and fresh ideas to take home.

When Libby travels, her focus is always on the natural world and the joy of beautiful gardens. She recently returned from a trip to Argentina and Peru where she walked in the high Andes looking at exquisite wildflowers, also visiting the Amazon Basin and the desert regions of the west coast and a number of private gardens in Buenos Aires.

Libby particularly enjoys travelling the world and touring within Australia with her husband Ian, and never lets work take over from her family life, with a growing band of grandchildren, and her love of golf, the surf and sailing.

Lastly, Libby loves to laugh! She believes it goes with gardening as one of the most important ingredients that

Peter  Whitehead

Peter has had a life of travel experiences having served in the British and South
African Merchant Marine for 17 years – visiting so many places on every continent
whilst working aboard freighters.

All this came after an upbringing in Africa, living on tea and coffee plantations in
Uganda and Kenya. Peter finished his schooling at a floating Royal Naval College in
London, went to sea as an apprentice, travelled the world and many years later
married Hilary and settled down in South Africa. Their two sons were born there,
whilst Peter was working for the South African Harbour Service.

Plants and gardening must have been in Peter's blood as his mother created
magnificent gardens wherever they settled in East Africa. As Peter says 'she didn't
have the luxury of a garden centre just around the corner. This was in the wilds of
remote central Africa.' So he always tried to make a garden wherever the young
family settled in South Africa.

Upon arrival in Australia in 1983, Peter and Hilary bought the Rast Bros Nursery
business based in Turramurra on Sydney's North Shore. It was a huge challenge,
never having been an employer, only an employee; let alone coming to terms with all
the Australian and exotic plants he had never heard of! There were some scary
times, but Peter, ably assisted by Hilary's office skills and a great staff, put Rast Bros
firmly back on everyone's garden centre radar!

Over the years Rast Bros became synonymous with garden centre retailing
excellence. They sold an extensive range of quality plants displayed in the lovely
ambience of the nursery. Rast Bros was to win many awards – community, industry
and small business, and even an overseas award from the International Garden
Centres Congress in 1998 for being the best garden centre in Australia.

Peter and Hilary decided to move on from retailing in 2007. A hard decision to make,
but after 23 years of retailing they wanted a change. Sadly, the nursery was destined
to close, and trading ceased mid-July 2007. The end of an era, but the start of a new
life for them both. Peter is busier than ever as he is working part time as a consultant
to the horticultural industry, as a freelance writer and as a Ross Tour leader – but he
does have his weekends back!

The two of them have travelled whenever possible - it's in their blood! They have
visited the Chelsea Flower Show several times and love the bulb festivals at
Keukenhof in Holland. They have visited numerous gardens all over Britain, France,
Holland and the Italian Lakes.

Peter has travelled as Tour Leader for Ross Garden Tours, with Hilary at his side as
a very delightful and important travelling companion; to Vietnam, France and China.
They thoroughly enjoy the friendships that Ross Tours bring and look forward to
many more tours in the future years.

Carolyn Dwyer

BA DipEd DipHort

Carolyn lives and breathes gardens in the NSW Southern Highlands where they have built a home amongst the birds and trees on Mt Gibraltar.   As an experienced Tour Leader for Ross Garden Tours International, she has travelled extensively to  Japan, New Zealand and Scandinavia.  Carolyn also leads garden tours in the Southern Highlands where her local knowledge entertains visitors to landmark gardens during Spring and Autumn. She is on the Committee of the Friends of Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens, a  project dedicated to setting up a new botanic garden of 30 acres in Bowral.

Carolyn has a Diploma in Horticulture and Landscape Design from Ryde College of TAFE and she has designed gardens for Garden Clinic Club members.

Carolyn writes articles for the Garden Clinic Journal and newspapers.  Her interest in botany, landscape design, history, art, food and architecture all add to the mix for interesting discussions when she is on tour with travellers.

Carolyn particularly enjoys Japan and catching up with the many friends who look forward to welcoming Ross Garden Tour each year.  She has been visiting Japan for over twenty years and she never tires of its beauty particularly during Cherry Blossom time in Spring.  Some of her favourite Japanese memories are the cherry blossom rain outside the Silver Pavilion in Kyoto, the eerie mist that swirls around the Shogun's tomb in the hills above Nikko and delicious Japanese seafood.

In Scandinavia, Carolyn tells us there is a special kind of energy that is young and vibrant.  She looks forward to the crystal clear air in the fjords, alpine flowers in the woodlands, smorgesbord dinners and because she is a true romantic;  the palaces, the gardens and the gorgeous crowns in the vaults of Swedish and Danish castles.
